In her new memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman, actress Brooke Shields shares a deeply personal and harrowing story about a violation of her consent during a medical procedure in her 40s.
Now 59, Shields reflects on a traumatic experience with her doctor, who performed an additional surgical procedure on her without her consent. The revelation has sparked important conversations about autonomy and respect in women’s healthcare.
The Procedure and the Betrayal
Shields recounts the incident during an interview with Us Weekly, revealing that her trusted gynaecologist had initially suggested a surgical labia reduction to address discomfort she had experienced since high school, including bleeding and chafing. Shields agreed to the procedure, trusting in the guidance of her medical team.
However, during a post-operative checkup, her plastic surgeon revealed something shocking: he had also performed a vaginal tightening procedure—a “rejuvenation”—without her prior knowledge or consent.
“He informed me that he threw in a little bonus,” Shields shared. “It felt like such an invasion—such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind.”
The surgeon “legitimately proudly explained to me that he, you know, threw in a little twofer,” Shields recounted. Both she and her gynaecologist were furious over the breach of trust.
The Emotional Aftermath
For Shields, the violation left her grappling with feelings of shame and anger. The betrayal was so profound that she didn’t speak about it—not even to her husband, Chris Henchy—for a long time.
“Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there,” she said. The unnecessary procedure felt like an imposition of societal pressures around women’s bodies, which she had not asked for or consented to.
Breaking the Silence
Shields writes candidly about the incident in her memoir, acknowledging the discomfort of sharing such intimate details but emphasising the need for transparency to drive change in women’s health.
“I’d be lying if I said I’m not embarrassed to share this very intimate information,” she writes. “But, if we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues. Shame is no longer an option.”
A Broader Call for Accountability
Shields’ story underscores the critical importance of informed consent in women’s healthcare. Procedures involving a woman’s body must always be performed with her explicit agreement, free of coercion or paternalism.
Her brave decision to speak out brings attention to a systemic issue that impacts many women: the lack of autonomy and respect they are afforded when it comes to their own bodies. By sharing her experience, Shields hopes to inspire women to demand better and to ensure that healthcare providers are held accountable for their actions.
Changing the Narrative Around Women’s Health
Shields’ memoir and public candor mark an important step in breaking the silence around medical violations and pushing for a healthcare system that prioritizes consent and respect. Her story serves as a reminder that conversations about women’s health must address not only physical well-being but also the autonomy and dignity of every patient.
It’s time for society and the medical community to take these issues seriously and ensure that no woman has to endure such a violation of trust again.
