Dame Kelly Holmes has sparked concern among her fans after sharing a cryptic health update on social media. The 54-year-old former Olympian, known for her incredible fitness and dedication to sport, revealed she received unexpected news from a gynaecologist – something she described as “not exactly what you want to hear.”
Posting to her Instagram Story, Dame Kelly shared a short video of herself walking outdoors, dressed in a grey jumper and cap, alongside the worrying message. She credited a casual chat with Dr. Naomi Potter – a menopause specialist and co-author of Menopausing with Davina McCall – for prompting her visit to the doctor.
“What a day! When you go to see a gynaecologist and it’s not exactly what you want to hear,” she wrote. “More to come but only when I have the outcome. All I can say is I am glad for casual chat with @dr_naomipotter.”

While she hasn’t shared further details, Dame Kelly has previously been open about her experiences with perimenopause, a transitional phase before menopause that brings symptoms such as hormonal fluctuations, aches, and fatigue. In a recent article for Metro, she spoke about how these changes have affected her body, explaining that she’s had to adapt her fitness routine as she ages.
A Life of Resilience and Adaptation
Dame Kelly’s latest health update follows her candid discussion about the challenges she faced after retiring from competitive sport. The transition from the regimented lifestyle of the Army and Olympic training to a life without strict structure took a toll on her mental health.
“I had already had a breakdown in 2003, and then after retiring I felt so low and depressed. I wasn’t sure who I was anymore and what my purpose was,” she previously wrote.
Despite the challenges, Dame Kelly has continued to prioritise her health, crediting Parkruns for helping her maintain both physical and mental well-being. She remains active and continues to inspire others with her commitment to fitness, even as she navigates the natural changes that come with aging.
Embracing Change
Reflecting on getting older, Dame Kelly previously admitted to The Telegraph that while she still feels fit, she doesn’t enjoy the aging process. “I don’t like it. I’m someone who used to have a six-pack. I still have one, but there are a couple more layers than I’d like over it now,” she said.
Even so, she remains positive about her health and fitness, acknowledging that while she may not have the same speed and endurance as in her Olympic days, she is still strong and active.
As fans wait for further updates on her health, Dame Kelly’s resilience and openness continue to be an inspiration, highlighting the importance of listening to our bodies and seeking medical advice when needed.
