Dublin-based femtech start-up Joii is transforming how we track periods with an AI-powered app that brings accuracy, insight, and visibility to menstrual health.
For Justyna Strzeszynska, menstrual health is more than a personal frustration, it’s the driving force behind a start-up that’s turning periods into measurable health data.
Joii was born out of a desire to address a longstanding issue: the gap between how periods are experienced and how they are understood by healthcare professionals.
Strzeszynska, who is also the company’s CEO, launched Joii to give people meaningful tools to track their menstrual health and advocate for better care. She said:
“There’s a massive gap between how periods are experienced and how they’re clinically understood, especially in diagnosing chronic conditions."
How the Joii App Works
Joii pairs a free-to-download mobile app with its own Evaluation Pads. Users can take a photo of a used pad, and the app uses machine learning and computer vision to analyse blood volume, clot size, and overall flow. Strzeszynska explains:
"We trained our AI model using lab-based simulations and real-world testing, ensuring the tech works under varied lighting and pad usage conditions.”
Within seconds, the app generates a detailed report, including:
Estimated blood volume in millilitres
Clot size
Flow intensity
Symptom trends over time
The pads are made with “eco-considerate materials” and come in recyclable packaging. The team is also developing reusable and flushable versions to support a wider range of period care preferences. Strzeszynska adds:
“We believe people deserve period care that works for their bodies and their values."
Who It’s For
Joii is designed for people experiencing heavy bleeding, undiagnosed conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids, or anyone who finds conventional tracking apps too vague.
The company’s long-term aim is to position menstrual blood as a vital sign – a measurable health indicator that clinicians can use to support diagnosis and treatment decisions. Strzeszynska said:
“We want Joii to become the go-to tool for anyone experiencing period symptoms, and a trusted resource for clinicians who need objective, cycle-linked data to support diagnosis and care.”
Growth and What’s Next
Since launching, Joii has begun building a presence across Ireland. Its Evaluation Pads are now available in over 30 retail outlets, including:
Evergreen
Meaghers
Molloys Pharmacy
Nourish
The app is available on iOS and Android. Joii has already completed a real-world evaluation study and is collaborating with academic institutions on further clinical trials. The product is CE-marked as a Class I medical device in the UK.
As the company looks to the future, it is preparing for a new round of funding to support its UK expansion, develop predictive tools for conditions such as anaemia, endometriosis and fibroids, and advance its clinical validation efforts. Strzeszynska said:
“We’ve kept the core team lean but mighty, and we’re growing as we scale up both retail and research activity."
The team is also exploring partnerships with healthcare systems and other femtech platforms.
Overcoming Challenges in Femtech
While Joii’s journey has been marked by innovation and impact, it has not been without challenges. Strzeszynska highlights the complexities of navigating medical device regulations and the need to educate investors unfamiliar with menstrual health:
“Fundraising in femtech also comes with its challenges: you have to explain not just your product, but the problem it solves – often to investors who’ve never experienced it."
But the Joii team is using these hurdles as fuel for progress.
“We’ve turned that into an opportunity to educate, disrupt, and push the conversation forward.”
Looking Ahead
Joii is helping to shift the way menstrual health is seen and measured. By combining accessible tech with thoughtful product design, the app offers real insight to people who often find themselves overlooked in traditional healthcare settings.
With its strong start in Ireland and growing momentum, Joii is a name to watch in the femtech space.
