In an innovative step to support community wellness, Tesco has launched a dedicated health zone in its newly refurbished Cheshunt Extra store, offering customers the ability to address healthcare needs while they shop. This new concept, a first for Tesco, aims to make healthcare services more accessible by integrating them into its store environment. Following the pilot launch, two additional stores in Hexham, Northumberland, and West Durrington, West Sussex, are set to introduce these services in 2025, with the potential for a national rollout if the concept proves successful.
The health zone brings together several trusted healthcare providers, creating a one-stop wellness experience where customers can book GP appointments, receive specialised health advice, and access a variety of services. Here’s a look at what’s available:
Bupa’s Primary Healthcare Services: From virtual GP appointments to weight management and earwax removal, Bupa’s affordable, pay-as-you-go services offer convenient access to quality healthcare without the need for insurance or membership.
Stella Menopause Care: Customers can access personalised support for managing menopause symptoms, including consultations on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) through Stella’s online menopause clinic.
Our Future Health Research Programme: In partnership with the UK’s largest health research initiative, Tesco offers customers the opportunity to join this research program, aiding groundbreaking studies on disease prevention and management. Participants also receive health insights, such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Haleon Oral Health Hub: In partnership with Haleon, customers can book free consultations with a qualified Oral Health Educator, who will provide guidance on family dental health.
Aptaclub Pregnancy and Infant Nutrition Support: Expecting and new parents can receive free, private consultations on pregnancy and early childhood nutrition, ensuring tailored guidance through the parenting journey.
This health-focused pilot builds on Tesco’s existing in-store pharmacy services, which already serve half a million customers each week across 365 UK locations. In addition to flu vaccinations, NHS Pharmacy First services, and free blood pressure checks, Tesco pharmacies provide vital health information in partnership with leading UK health charities, including the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, and Diabetes UK.
Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s Chief Commercial Officer, shared his thoughts on the initiative:
“Good health starts with good food, but it also relies on access to timely support and care. With Tesco’s extensive network across the UK, we’re uniquely positioned to make healthcare more accessible to customers and help reduce pressure on the NHS. We look forward to hearing customer feedback on this pilot and exploring further ways to support them on their wellness journeys.”
The health services will take place in two new private consultation rooms within the Cheshunt store, where customers can meet in person with pharmacists or access virtual consultations with other healthcare professionals. The aim is to create a seamless shopping experience where customers can manage their health, nutrition, and daily needs all under one roof.
This concept, part of Tesco’s “Helping you to live healthier” campaign, launched in 2018, reinforces Tesco’s commitment to enhancing community health. With the growing demand for accessible healthcare, Tesco’s new health zone may set a precedent, offering a much-needed blend of convenience, quality, and comprehensive care.
